Frequently Asked Questions
What is pilates, anyway?
Pilates is an exercise method created by Joseph Pilates in the 1920's. Originally called Contrology, pilates focuses on six principles: concentration, control, breathing, precision, flow, and centering. Joe Pilates believed "you are only as old as your spine", and the key to a young spine is a strong core. In reformer pilates, we work on a moving machine that uses springs to either aid an exercise, or create resistance. Reformer pilates is a great way to build long, lean muscles and strengthen bones. Low impact and purposeful, pilates is a beneficial workout for everyone and can completely transform your body, and change your life!
Do I need to be in shape to do pilates?
Not at all! Every client starts at a different level, and we will assist you at a pace that feels right for your body. People of all ages and abilities can benefit from pilates, and because it is a low impact exercise, it is perfect for those with joint and spine concerns. If you are under a doctor's care, we encourage you to have a conversation with them before starting any new exercise routine.
What do I wear/bring?
We move the body in every direction in pilates, so be sure to wear fabrics that move with you. PLEASE NOTE: All clothing must be free of rivets, snaps, zippers, or other hard materials that can damage the reformers. Please understand that we cannot budge on this policy, so be mindful when getting dressed for class. Shoes are not permitted on the equipment, and while socks are optional, we recommend wearing "grip" socks for the best stability. Perfumes and heavily perfumed lotions and beauty products are also prohibited in the studio. Feel free to bring along your own water and a towel, if you would like.
What if I can't make it to my class?
We understand that life happens, and sometimes things pop up. Here is our cancellation policy:
Cancellations up to 24 hours prior to class receive a full refund. Classes are nonrefundable if canceled within 24 hours. We give clients one grace class a year, in case of emergencies.
How do I sign up?
In order to book a spot in a group class, it is important to hold your place as soon as you can. We only have four reformers, so slots fill up fast! You must create a Vagaro (our booking software) account and purchase the class or package/promotion of your choosing. If it is your first time, you will be required to fill out some important forms before signing up for your classes, but you won't have to do this step in the future. To schedule a private or semi-private, or if you have any questions, please email [email protected] or text 818-687-3792. Please keep in mind that it may take us a few days to get back to you, as we teach many sessions through the week, and are raising two growing kids, a dog, and a cat.
